Description

Replacing our previous course ‘Working with 8-14s who stammer’, we have Palin STSC(8-14) which will equip you with new skills for working with this client group.   We are currently working on making this available in an online self-directed learning format. 

Palin STSC(8-14) is a structured therapy programme which is implemented following a comprehensive assessment of the child’s strengths and needs. It is based on the understanding that stammering is multifactorial, in that linguistic, emotional, environmental and physical factors interact with the genetic predisposition to stammer.  The Palin Model is the foundation used to inform the assessment and therapy process.

There are 10 therapy sessions, which have a set of goals and activities to be carried out.  The aim is to build knowledge and skills in the child and parents, to reduce any negative impact of the stammering and to give everyone skills and strategies that will help enhance communication and confidence in the longer term.

Evidence base for Palin STSC(8-14)

• Therapists who are trained in the programme gain confidence and knowledge in how to support children aged 8-14 who stammer, and their parents (Millard et al., 2025).
• Therapists who are trained in the approach can deliver the therapy as it was intended (i.e. there is a high degree of fidelity to treatment), both in terms of adherence to the therapy programme and in their skills competence (Delpeche et al, in review, Millard et al., 2025).
• Children and parents who attended Palin STSC(8-14) therapy, exhibit a reduction in stammering impact from the perspectives of both children and parents; a reduction in parent concern about stammering; and an increase in parents’ knowledge and confidence in how to support their child (Caughter et al., 2026; McLean et al., in review, Millard et al., 2025).

Course content

The online self-directed learning will include the background and evidence base for Palin STSC(8-14), information about influences and theoretical underpinnings, and teaching on: how to deliver comprehensive child assessment, parent interview and formulation; the rationale and content of the 10 therapy sessions, and session resources; and how to review and plan next steps.  There will be supplementary information, including tips on how to adapt therapy for online working.  The learning will be illustrated with case examples and client videos.

Who is this suitable for

This training is for Speech and Language Therapists.  Therapists may be generalist therapists or specialists in stammering.
