Being a Clinical Supervisor, a workshop for AHPs

Outline of the course: This two-day course will provide an introduction to Clinical Supervision for Allied Health Professionals, including Speech & Language Therapists. It will support clinicians to reflect on the supervision they receive and prepare those who wish to develop their skills in becoming clinical supervisors. The aim of the course is to build confidence, knowledge and specific skills related to clinical supervision. Several different models, styles and techniques will be introduced, drawing from a range of psychological approaches, so that participants can include a variety of styles, techniques, and questions in the clinical supervision they offer, depending on the hopes and needs of the supervisee and their stage of development and experience.
The course will be experiential and interactive, with opportunities for discussion, practical activities, skill development and reflection.

Course content:
There will be elements of teaching alongside break out discussion and skills practice.
- The nuts and bolts of clinical supervision (definitions, models, functions, tools & outcome measures)
- Developing the supervisory relationship
- Setting up a contract
- Attending to the process of clinical supervision (boundaries, parallel process, ethical dilemmas)
- The qualities of a supervisor
- Ending supervision

Ali Berquez is Clinical Lead at the Michael Palin Centre. She works with clients of all ages who stammer and/ or clutter, including adults. As a qualified practitioner in CBT and SFBT, Ali integrates these methods into her clinical work. Ali is an experienced trainer who regularly delivers courses in the UK and internationally. She is Safeguarding Lead and leads on Clinical Supervision at the Centre. She offers individual and group clinical supervision to generalist and specialist SLTs from novice to master practitioner both individually and in groups aiming to develop their skills, confidence and reflective practice.
Ali has a broad experience of clinical supervision including group Personal Construct Psychology supervision (with a mix of professionals); group Cognitive Behaviour Therapy supervision at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre (with psychologists, psychiatrists and counselling psychologists); peer group supervision at Place2Be (with qualified counsellors), individual clinical supervision with a Family Therapist, and group and individual supervision at the Michael Palin Centre (with stammering specialist SLTs).
