What is SFBT?

SFBT changes the focus of therapy from the problem to the solution, exploring what clients want from therapy and using clients’ resources and strengths to achieve their best hopes. SFBT has been used with parents, children, teenagers and adults who stutter (Berquez & Jeffery, 2024; Nicholas, 2015) and can be adapted for use in clinical supervision and team meetings.

What will the masterclass involve?

This masterclass will explore a client’s therapy journey to bring the principles and practice of SFBT to life and how it can be applied to stammering therapy. The workshop will include teaching, discussion and practical exercises and will be supported by video observation and reflection. It is suitable for those who are experienced in SFBT as well as those interested in developing their understanding of it.

We recommend that participants purchase a copy of Solution Focused Brief Therapy with Children and Young People who Stammer and their Parents. A Practical Guide from the Michael Palin Centre by Berquez & Jeffery to accompany this masterclass. Some copies will be available to purchase on the day (£35 cash only). Ali Berquez is Clinical Lead at the Michael Palin Centre. She works with clients of all ages who stammer and clutter. As a qualified practitioner in SFBT and CBT, Ali integrates these methods into her clinical work with children, young people and parents.  Ali is an experienced trainer delivering courses in the UK and internationally. She is involved in writing, offering clinical supervision and contributing to research projects and is a certified European Stuttering Specialist. Ali co-authored a book about SFBT with Martha Jeffery about children and young people who stammer and their parents in 2024.
