Supporting Autistic Children Who Stammer @thepalincentre via Zoom (November 2025)

This online training course provides an overview of current research and clinical practice at the intersection of Autism and Stammering, with a focus on working with children under 7 and those aged 8–14. This course explores how to adapt established approaches such as Palin Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) and Family Communication Skills for autistic children who stammer.

Who is this suitable for?

Qualified speech and language therapists. This course is particularly suited to therapists with experience supporting children who stammer, and those wishing to develop confidence in adapting parent child interaction therapy and family communication skills therapy for autistic children.

What’s in it for Participants?

  • A brief overview of theory related to autism (e.g. monotropism, gestalt language processing and sensory processing) and to stammering.
  • Understanding the key research and theory relating to the intersectionality of autism and stammering.
  • Learning how to adapt core therapy approaches (e.g. Palin PCI and Family Communication Skills) for use with autistic children who stammer.
  • Exploring clinical examples and participating in discussions around best practice.
  • Gaining insight into the lived experiences of autistic children who stammer and their families.

At the end of the course participants will be familiar with:

  • Core facts and research on autism, stammering and the intersectionality between autism and stammering.
  • Considerations for adapting therapy approaches to support the unique profiles of autistic children.
  • Practical examples of how to deliver therapy for stammering flexibly and responsively with this client group.
  • Strategies to enhance engagement and communication with both children and their families.
  • Tools to support reflective clinical decision-making and inclusive practice.
