Refer to the MPC

Every child or young person up to 18;11 years old who stammers or clutters and has a UK GP is eligible for a charitably funded assessment at the Michael Palin Centre (MPC).

We accept self-referrals and referrals by other professionals (e.g., GP, school, others). This includes children and young people whose parent/carer is in the UK Armed forces stationed abroad.

If available and appropriate we will liaise with your local NHS Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service and involve them in your child’s assessment. Our waiting time for assessment is currently between 4-6 months.

When it is time for your child’s assessment, we aim to give you two months’ notice of an appointment and typically phone you to book dates and then email to confirm. Your child’s assessment lasts up to two hours, and your parent session lasts between three to four hours. If you require an interpreter, this will be arranged.

Feedback about your child’s assessment will be given to you and recommendations made. A clinical report will also be written as a summary of what happened on the day. Your family and local SLT (if you have one) can choose to attend in person or via telehealth.

For families who do not have a UK GP, or who would prefer to be seen via our private pathway, they can pay for their child’s assessment with a likely waiting time of 2 months. There is an additional fee for professional interpreting services when these are required. Please note that payment is required in advance for both UK and non-UK private pathway assessments.

There are several avenues for therapy, if therapy is required:

  • Local therapy (when this is available) with your local NHS SLT service.
  • Individual therapy at the MPC. For all Camden and Islington residents and for children aged 7 upwards in Newham this is fully funded by the NHS. For others, we will explore ways for this to be funded, once we know what your child needs. An individual programme for under 7s starts with a minimum of 10 hours and an individual programme for a school-aged child or young person starts with a minimum of 15 hours.
  • Under 7 parent group therapy. This option is available in person or online. For all Camden and Islington residents this is fully funded by the NHS. For others, we will explore ways for this to be funded, once we know what your child needs.
  • Charitably funded group therapy at the MPC for 10-14s. Dates for the next groups are as follows: 27th to 31st October 2025, OR 23rd to 27th March 2026. (NB this group is non-residential and includes parents throughout).
  • Charitably funded group therapy at the MPC for 15-18;11s. Dates for the next groups are as follows: 20th to 31st July 2026 (NB this group is non-residential and includes an optional Parents’ Day).
  • Privately funded therapy. Please email [email protected] if you want more information.
