Refer to the MPC

We aim to help every child or young person who stammers or clutters to access support, either with their local speech and language service or through the Michael Palin Centre.

Once you send your referral form to the MPC we will phone you to discuss the next steps. This could include helping you to access speech and language support where you live or an assessment at the MPC. When you make a referral, please check your emails (including your junk folder) for an acknowledgement email from us.

The MPC assessment clinic

Our assessment clinic is the first step with the MPC. It is a stand-alone service for age 2-18 years 11 months. It enables us to give you advice and make recommendations for you and your child.

Our assessment clinic is NHS-funded and charitably funded by the Stuttering Foundation.

International families, or UK families wishing to be seen more quickly than is standard for our assessment clinic can arrange a private assessment.

Who can refer: We accept self-referrals and referrals by other professionals (e.g. GP, school). This includes children and young people whose parent/carer is in the UK Armed forces stationed abroad.

Waiting time: Our waiting time for assessment is currently between 4-6 months.

What happens after the MPC assessment clinic?

  1. Feedback about your child’s assessment will be given to you and we will share recommendations for next steps. Your family and local SLT (if you have one) can choose to attend in person or via online to hear the recommendations. A written clinical report will also be provided to you as a summary of what happened on the day.
  2. Therapy. If therapy is recommended or wanted there are several pathways to access therapy. We will discuss these with you including options for funding:
  • Local therapy with your local NHS SLT service.
  • Group therapy at the MPC for 10-14s. Our year-long group programmes are designed for children at key points in their lives e.g. starting secondary school. The programme includes a 1-week intensive group; four follow-up meetings; individual sessions (face-to-face or online) if needed. The group therapy programme is non-residential and includes parents. • Group therapy at the MPC for 15-18;11s. Our year-long programmes are designed for young people at key points in their lives. Included is a 2-week intensive group (usually last 2 weeks of July); four follow-up meetings; additional individual sessions if you want extra help. This group is non-residential and includes an optional parents’ day. Find out more
  • Individual therapy at the MPC. For all Camden and Islington residents, for children aged 7 upwards in Newham and secondary age children in Mid & South Essex this is fully funded by the NHS. For others, we will explore options for funding, once we know what your child needs.
  • Under 8’s parent group therapy. Designed for parents/carers to learn more about stammering and how to support your child. Available in person or online. Children do not attend the sessions. For Camden and Islington residents this is fully funded by the NHS. For others, we will explore options for funding, once we know what your child needs.
  • Privately funded therapy. Please email [email protected] for more information.
